How to use this tracker

  1. Enter the recipient, the gift name, and the occasion.
  2. Add the purchase date and the return deadline. Most stores give 30 to 90 days. Check your receipt for the exact date.
  3. Mark whether you saved the receipt. If you lost it, note that here so you do not waste time looking later.
  4. When you regift something, mark it as regifted and add who received it. The tracker will warn you if you try to give it back to the original giver.
  5. Before the next occasion, open the log and scan the return deadlines. Return anything you need to, then start logging new gifts.

A quick scenario

Your office does a Secret Santa in December. You buy a candle set from a coworker named Jordan for $30. The store allows returns within 60 days. You log the gift with Jordan as the recipient, the candle set as the item, and the return deadline as February 14. In January, the tracker shows one return due soon. You check the receipt, decide to keep the candle set, and clear the alert. In March, your friend has a birthday. You buy a board game. Later, you consider regifting the leftover candle set to your friend. The tracker does not flag a conflict because Jordan is not the same person. You mark the candle set as regifted and move on.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to write down the return deadline right away. Once the receipt is buried in a drawer, the date is easy to miss.
  • Regifting without checking the log. If you gave your sister a cookbook last year, she should not get one from you again this year, and you should not get one back from her.
  • Assuming all stores have the same return window. Some close returns after 14 days. Some stop taking returns after the holiday. Write the actual date here.
  • Not marking lost receipts. If you know the receipt is gone, mark it. That saves you from searching for it later.

What this tracker does not do

It does not connect to any store. It does not send you email reminders. It does not know who is in your family or your office. You have to enter the gifts yourself. The regift warnings only work if you actually log the original gift. If you skip an entry, the tracker cannot catch the conflict.

Keeping your data

Your log is saved in your browser. If you switch browsers or clear your site data, the log will be empty. Use the Export button to download a backup. Use the Import button to restore it later. You can also use the Share link button to create a URL that holds a snapshot of your current log. Send that link to yourself as a bookmark or to someone else for reference.
